About Oldham

Oldham is a metropolitan borough within Greater Manchester in northwest England. Covering approximately 142 square kilometres of the southern Pennine foothills and the western edge of the Peak District uplands, Oldham had a population of approximately 237,000 at the 2021 Census. At its industrial peak in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Oldham was the single greatest cotton-spinning centre in the world — a fact almost unimaginable in scale — with more cotton spindles operating in its mills than the entire United States put together. History and Cotton Spinning Oldham's extraordinary industrial ascent was driven by its geography — the surrounding moors provided clean, damp air suitable for spinning fine cotton thread, and fast-flowing Pennine streams provided early water power — and by the entrepreneurial energy of the Lancashire mill-owners. By the late Victorian era, Oldham had become what contemporaries called "the cotton capital of the world." The town operated under a distinctive form of industrial organisation — the Oldham Limited model — in which workers could buy shares in cotton mills, creating a form of industrial co-partnership unique in the history of British capitalism. Hundreds of Oldham Limited companies were floated on local share markets between the 1860s and 1900s. The global cotton trade, however, was subject to brutal economic cycles, and Oldham's mills suffered repeated crises. The final collapse of the cotton industry after the Second World War devastated the town economically, leaving a legacy of empty mills and high unemployment that shaped Oldham's social geography for decades. Many of the great Edwardian mills — some of the largest cotton-spinning factories ever built — have since been converted into apartments, business parks, or museums, while others have been demolished. Winston Churchill and Saddleworth Oldham has an unexpected connection with one of Britain's greatest political figures: Winston Churchill was first elected to Parliament as the Member for Oldham in the 1900 general election, defeating the Liberal candidate. He would later cross the floor of the House and become one of the 20th century's most celebrated political figures. Saddleworth, a picturesque area of moorland villages in the eastern part of the borough (historically part of Yorkshire until 1974), is one of the most scenic areas of Greater Manchester. The high Pennine moorland above Saddleworth village contains Saddleworth Moor, which achieved tragic fame in the 1960s as the location of some of the victims buried by the Moors Murderers Ian Brady and Myra Hindley. Oldham Athletic FC Oldham Athletic FC, known as "The Latics," is the town's professional football club, competing in the English Football League. The club reached the top flight of English football (then the First Division) for the first time in 1991 and finished 17th in the inaugural Premier League season of 1992–93. The Boundary Park ground is one of the highest-altitude Football League grounds in England. Population and Demographics The 2021 Census recorded approximately 237,000 residents. Oldham is significantly diverse, with approximately 62% White British and approximately 22% of Asian heritage (predominantly British Pakistani and British Bangladeshi), reflecting the large-scale migration from South Asia to the Lancashire mill towns in the 1950s–1970s. The borough experienced significant ethnic tensions in the early 21st century, culminating in serious civil unrest in 2001.
