About Isle of Anglesey

The Isle of Anglesey (Ynys Môn in Welsh) is a principal area occupying an island in north-west Wales, separated from the mainland by the Menai Strait. Covering approximately 714 square kilometres, Anglesey had a population of approximately 70,000 at the 2022 Census, with Llangefni as its administrative centre and Holyhead its largest town. Roman Conquest and the Last Stand of the Druids Anglesey — known to the Romans as Mona — was the last stronghold of the druids in Britain, and in around AD 60–61 the Roman governor Suetonius Paulinus led an assault across the Menai Strait that, according to the historian Tacitus, resulted in the destruction of the island's sacred groves and druidic community; the island's dense concentration of prehistoric burial chambers and standing stones, including Bryn Celli Ddu, testifies to its long ceremonial importance before and after Roman contact. Beaumaris Castle and the Bridges of Menai Beaumaris Castle, begun in 1295 by Edward I as the last and largest of his Welsh castles, is regarded by historians as the most technically perfect example of medieval concentric castle design in Britain despite never being fully completed; it forms part of the "Castles and Town Walls of King Edward in Gwynedd" UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Menai Suspension Bridge, designed by Thomas Telford and completed in 1826, was one of the first modern suspension bridges in the world, and the neighbouring Britannia Bridge, originally built by Robert Stephenson as a tubular railway bridge in 1850, was rebuilt as a combined road and rail crossing after a fire in 1970. The village of Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, given its extended 58-letter name as a Victorian publicity stunt, holds the record for the longest place name in the United Kingdom. South Stack Lighthouse, built in 1809 on a rocky islet off Holy Island, overlooks nesting seabird colonies protected by the RSPB.
