About Vale of Glamorgan

The Vale of Glamorgan (Bro Morgannwg) is a principal area in south Wales, immediately west of Cardiff along the Bristol Channel coast. Covering approximately 337 square kilometres of fertile farmland and a designated Heritage Coast, the Vale of Glamorgan had a population of approximately 133,000 at the 2022 Census, with Barry as its largest town. Barry Island and St Donat's Castle Barry Island, once a genuinely separate island before land reclamation joined it to the mainland, developed into one of Wales's most popular seaside resorts in the 20th century and was brought to renewed national attention as the setting for the BBC comedy "Gavin & Stacey," whose fictional Marco's Cafe and Barry Island funfair drew a new generation of visitors to its promenade and beach. St Donat's Castle, on the Heritage Coast, dates from the 12th century and was purchased in 1925 by the American newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst, who lavishly restored it; since 1962 it has been home to Atlantic College, the founding institution of the United World Colleges movement, which brings together students from around the world for pre-university education. Cowbridge and Cardiff Airport Cowbridge, an exceptionally well-preserved medieval walled market town, retains much of its historic street plan and town gate, and is regarded as one of the finest small towns in Wales. Cardiff Airport, Wales's principal international airport despite lying entirely within the Vale of Glamorgan near Rhoose, connects the region to destinations across Europe and beyond, complementing the area's mix of commuter towns, agriculture, and coastal tourism.
