About Newport
Newport (Casnewydd) is a principal area and city in south-east Wales, the third-largest city in the country, situated at the mouth of the River Usk on the Severn Estuary. Newport had a population of approximately 159,000 at the 2022 Census and developed historically as a major port and centre of steel and engineering industries. The Transporter Bridge and the Newport Ship The Newport Transporter Bridge, completed in 1906 to a design by the French engineer Ferdinand Arnodin, is one of only a handful of working transporter bridges left anywhere in the world; a Grade I listed structure, its gondola carries pedestrians and vehicles across the River Usk suspended from a towering steel superstructure, avoiding the need for a conventional high-level crossing over the busy tidal river. In 2002, workers excavating the site of the Riverfront Arts Centre uncovered the remains of the Newport Ship, a medieval trading vessel dated to around the 1450s and one of the most significant finds of its kind, whose timbers are now undergoing conservation for eventual public display. Tredegar House and the Chartist Rising Tredegar House, on the edge of the city, is one of the finest surviving 17th-century mansions in Britain, built for the Morgan family and now cared for by the National Trust. In 1839, Newport was the site of the Chartist Rising, in which several thousand demonstrators marched on the town demanding political reform, only for troops to open fire at the Westgate Hotel, killing around 22 marchers in what remains the last large-scale armed insurrection against the British state.
